Well, the apps and processes on a Windows 10 system don’t always have the most user-friendly name. Mostly you’ll see apps or also processes that are running. And you guys will have to Google their name in order to check if they should be there. If they are safe, or if you have to run a really thorough scan on the system. Just read this article to know all about Why Does Elara App Prevents Windows 10 from Shutting Down. Let’s begin!

If your attempts to shut down your Windows 10 system are blocked via an app called Elara. And you guys see it’s associated along with the ApntEX.exe process in task manager as well. You may also want to know where it came from and if it’s time for a fresh install as well.

What is Elara App?

The Elara app is basically an app to control the touchpad as well. You guys will find this app running on laptops. The Elara app is installed via many laptop manufactures and they’re all able to use it because while the manufacturer is different such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. They do mostly end up using the same hardware in their products. This in turn means they can most of the timeshare or use the same apps in order to manage the hardware components. The Elara app is one such app actually.

Technically speaking, this app isn’t present via this name on new laptops. Manufacturers such as Dell, HP, etc., also have rebranded it and you won’t see it most of the time. Not often doesn’t mean never so if this app is avoiding your system from shutting down, here’s what you can do as well.

Why Does Elara App Prevent Windows 10 from Shutting Down?

Elara App might avoid Windows from shutting down since it is always running in the background if it has been installed on your PC. When Windows shuts down it closes all the processes in the background, but, if a process is deemed sensitive via the operating system. It cancels the shutdown process and also warns the user of the existence of a sensitive background task as well.

Turn off Elara

You guys can safely disable Elara, hs the app will start again. It’s a really good idea to turn it off before shutting your system down.

  • Right-tap on the taskbar and choose Task Manager from the context menu.
  • Head to the Processes tab.
  • Now look for Elara, and select it.
  • Tap on the End Task button at the bottom right.

Set Elara to auto-quit

Manually quitting Elara is tedious so that you can set it to quit automatically. This is also going to affect all apps that can avoid a system from shutting down, not just Elara, so just consider that before you apply this fix actually.

  • Click on the Win+R keyboard shortcut in order to open the run box.
  • In the run box, you have to enter ‘regedit’, and tap the enter key.
  • The registry editor will also open. Navigate to the following key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

  • Right-tap on the Desktop value, and choose New>DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  • Then name it AutoEndTasks.
  • Double-tap on it, and then set its value to 1.
  • Restart your system and apps will no longer be able to avoid the system from shutting down.

Remove the Elara app from the system

Windows 10 has excellent generic drivers for the touchpad and you guys do not need a special app installed via your laptop manufacturer for it to run as well. This holds true regardless of which version of Windows 10 you guys are running so that you can uninstall this app. In order to be safe, you guys should have a mouse on hand that you can connect to your system before you delete the app.

Find alternative drivers

We’re depending on Windows 10 installing generic drivers for the touchpad, however, to be on the safe side. You should find and download Synaptics touchpad drivers that are also compatible along with your system. When you do that, you will have a fall-back plan in case the generic drivers don’t install as well.

You can also find the right drivers for your laptop on the laptop manufacturer’s website. You might see Elan drivers rather than Synaptics. Those will work fine as well.

Install alternative drivers

Make sure that you’ve connected a mouse to your system before you proceed.

  • First, open the Device Manager.
  • Now expand Mouse and many other pointing devices.
  • Choose your touchpad, and right-click it.
  • Then choose Uninstall device. And accept any on-screen prompts.
  • Your touchpad will no longer work as well.
  • Also, restart the system.
  • Windows 10 will also detect the hardware (your touchpad) and then install drivers for it.
  • If the drivers do not install, then open Device Manager and head to Mouse and many other pointing devices.
  • Right-tap on the touchpad, and choose ‘Install device’ or ‘Update driver’.
  • When drivers are installed and your touchpad is working again, and it’s a really good idea in order to restart the system again.
