Use Highlights Notes & Apple Book App: The Apple Books app is a dreadful tool, of course, reading books. But the app has additional features that you might not know about. Like, when you can open PDF files in Books and annotate them. Also, you can make notes and highlight passages in books. This is quite good for textbooks or references.

The best thing is that those items sync with other devices where you sign in to Books with the same Apple ID. So you can also make notes in Books on your iPhone when you’re out and about and then have them handy when you get home to work on your Mac.

Highlights in Books on iPhone and iPad

Open the book on your iPhone or iPad in the Books app and then carefully follow these steps to add or remove highlights.

Add a highlight

Step 1:

Tap and hold to choose a word and then drag to take more text if needed.

Step 2:

Choose Highlight from the shortcut menu.

Step 3:

Also, Click the circles on the far left to choose a color.

Step 4:

Click anywhere on the screen to close the highlight window.

Remove a highlight

Step 1:

Firstly, Click and hold the highlighted text.

Step 2:

Also, Choose Highlight from the shortcut menu.

Step 3:

Click the trash can.

Notes in Books on iPhone and iPad

Open the Books app on your iPhone or iPad to the book where you want to add or delete notes and then do one of the following.

Add a note

Step 1:

Choose the spot in the book where you want to add the note.

Step 2:

Click and hold the text to show the shortcut menu.

Step 3:

Also, Click the arrow on the right of the shortcut menu to see the other choices and choose Note.

Step 4:

Input your note and tap Done.

Also, you can choose Highlight from the shortcut menu, choose the Note icon, and enter your note.

Remove/ Erase a Note

In Books, notes are associated with highlights. So you can either remove both or just the note itself.

Step 1:

If you want to remove both, click and hold the text for the note and highlight to bring up the shortcut menu.

Step 2:

Choose Highlight and click the trash can.

Step 3:

Also, confirm that you want to erase both the note and the highlight by clicking Delete.

Step 4:

If you want to remove the note only, click and hold the note marker or the associated text and choose Note from the shortcut menu.

Step 3:

Also, Delete all of the text in the note and click Done.

You’ll now see that your text is still highlighted, but the note and its marker are gone.

Any highlights or notes that you add in Books on iOS will appear in the same place.

Click the center of the screen to open the controls menu and choose Notes. Here you’ll see a list of highlights and notes along with the page numbers. Also, Click to visit the page with the highlight or note if you want to make edits to it.

To delete a highlight and note, swipe it from right to left and click Delete.

Highlights in Books on Mac

Open the Books app on your Mac to the book where you wish to add or remove highlights, then do one of the following.

Add a highlight

Step 1:

Choose the text that you wish to highlight by holding your cursor and dragging through a word, phrase, sentence, or paragraph.

Step 2:

Also, you should see a shortcut menu appear immediately. Select a color on the menu and it will apply as a highlight. You can also select the red underline option if you want.

Alternatively, you can choose Edit > Highlight and pick a color from the menu bar.

Remove a highlight

If you wish to delete a highlight in Apple Books later, this is super easy.

Choose any part of the highlighted text and tap Remove Highlight from the shortcut menu or tap Edit > Highlight > None from the menu bar.

Notes in Books on Mac

Also, Open the Books app on your Mac to the book where you wish to add or delete notes and then do one of the following.

Add a note

Step 1:

Choose the spot in the book where you wish to add the note.

Step 2:

Right-click or hold Control and tap to show the shortcut menu. Choose Add Note.

Also, you can choose a text and tap Edit > Add Note from the menu bar.

Step 3:

When the small window opens, enter your note. Tap away from the note to close its window.

Here you’ll see a marker in the book where you added the note.

Make sure that the note you add also adds a highlight to the text in the same color. You can also change the note and highlight color by opening the shortcut menu again and choosing a different one.

Remove a note

To delete a note just right-click the text that the note is attached to and when the shortcut menu displays, choose either Remove Note or Remove Highlight & Note.

Make sure that if you only select to Remove Note, that highlight will remain attached to the text.

View highlights and notes on Mac

Any highlights or notes that you add in Books on Mac will appear in the same place. Hover your cursor to the top of the Books window to open the controls menu.

Tap the Show Notes button on the left. You’ll see a list of highlights and notes along with the page numbers.

  • Tap the page number to jump to that spot in the book.
  • Also, click an existing note to edit it.
  • Tap Add Note to add a new note to the highlight.

When you complete, just tap the Show Notes button in the controls menu to close the list.
