How to Fix Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device Error

How to Fix Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device Error

Check if the Hard Disk is damaged/failed

If the above method weren’t helpful at all then there is a chance that your hard disk might also be damaged or corrupted. In any case, you guys have to replace your previous HDD or SSD along with a new one and install Windows again. However, before running to any conclusion, then you guys must run a Diagnostic tool to check if you really have to replace HDD/SSD.

In order to run Diagnostics restart your PC and as the PC starts (before the boot screen), tap on the F12 key, and whenever the Boot menu appears. Just highlight the Boot to Utility Partition option or Diagnostics option and then click enter to start the Diagnostics. This will automatically check all the hardware of your system and will then report back if any issue is there.

Run startup/Automatic Repair

  • Just insert the Windows 10 bootable installation DVD and restart your PC.
  • Whenever prompted to click any key to boot from CD or DVD, tap on any key to continue.
  • Choose your language preferences, and click on Next. Tap Repair your PC in the bottom-left.
  • On select, an options screen, tap on Troubleshoot.
  • Then on Troubleshoot screen, click the Advanced option.
  • On the Advanced options screen, you have to tap on Automatic Repair or Startup Repair.
  • Now just wait until the Windows Automatic or Startup Repairs complete.
  • Then just restart and you guys have successfully Fix Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device issue, if not,then continue.

Set Correct Boot Order

You guys may be seeing the error “Reboot and Select a proper Boot device” as the boot order is not properly set. That actually means that computer is trying to boot from another source that doesn’t even have an operating system hence failing to do this. In order to fix this issue, you have to set the Hard Disk since the top priority in the Boot order. Let’s see how you set proper boot order:

  • Whenever your PC starts (Before the boot screen or the error screen). Just repeatedly tap on the Delete as well as F1 or F2 key (Relying upon your PC’s manufacturer) to enter BIOS setup.
  • Whenever you are in BIOS setup choose the Boot tab from the list of options.

Select Proper Boot Device

  • Now make sure that the PC Hard disk or SSD is all set as a top priority in the Boot order. If not then use up as well as down arrow keys in order to set the hard disk at the top. That means the PC will first boot from it rather than any other source.

Change the Active Partition in Windows | Select Proper Boot Device

  • Again, you have to open cmd using a Windows installation disk.
  • Just type the following command into cmd and click on enter after each one:

Note: Always mark the System Reserved Partition (generally 100mb) active actually. And if you guys don’t really have a System Reserved Partition then mark C: Drive as the active partition.

  • Just close the command prompt and now restart your PC. In a lot of cases, this method was able to Fix Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device issue.

Enable UEFI Boot | Select Proper Boot Device

  • You have to restart your PC and then tap F2 or DEL relying upon your PC in order to open Boot Setup.
  • Then just make the following changes:
Change Boot list option to UEFI
Disable Load Legacy option ROM
Enable Secure boot
  • Now, click on F10 to Save and just Exit the boot setup.

Repair Install Windows 10

If none of the above solution work for you then you guys can make sure that your HDD is fine. But, you may be seeing the error “Reboot and Select proper Boot device Or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot device and press a key”. As the operating system or the BCD information on the HDD was somehow erased.
