The saga GTA has accustomed us to having to flee from the police after committing some crime in their video games. Of course, the car chases are not something that invented the Rockstar franchise, since previously we had already experienced this emotion on the big screen thanks to films like Bullitt, Vanishing Point or The Driver. Many have followed this current in all kinds of media. Very many. But the Finns of Tree Men Games have managed to combine this emotion very well in PAKO, a saga of fun games in which cars are the protagonists.
“None of us has worked at Rovio, Supercell or any other large company.” This is how the members of Tree Men Games are defined on their website. A statement that talks about its independence in cold Finland. Not for nothing, this land has become a bastion of popular video games, such as Angry Birds or Clash Royale. But the games that make up the, for now, PAKO trilogy are something else.
We are facing more arcade titles where our objective is to get better scores for each new game. Something that will take us to get new vehicles and scenarios. A common resource in the mobile medium, although these games have also ended up appearing on PC and MAC. With different qualities, yes. Luckily, all the games feature a very low-key and attractive low poly visual aspect, as well as the synthwave of DKSTR.
So far three video games have been released under the sign of PAKO: PAKO – Car Chase Simulator, PAKO 2 and PAKO Forever. The first two are officially available on Android, while PAKO Forever is currently in Soft Launch.
2013 was the year in which three Finnish students who had not yet finished university decided to create a video game company. A year later, PAKO – Car Chase Simulator saw the light on Windows Phone. The curious decision the less. Later the game would appear on the two leading mobile systems: iOS and Android. Thus, Tree Men Games took its first steps thanks to a simple and fun arcade. Short games and instant fun, what else do we want?
PAKO is a car chase game that puts everything into a simple control consisting of only two buttons: one to turn left and the other to do the same with the right. Everything else goes through our ability to dodge both the police patrols that persecute us, as well as the different obstacles on the stage. A single blow and we will have to start the game again. As we said before, we will gain more points the longer we can hold without crashing. Something that will lead us to unlock more scenarios and vehicles that give more chicha to this work.
PAKO 2 not only expands the original game experience with larger scenarios, but things have changed much more. The love of nostalgia here is accentuated much more since all the game leaves a regustillo to the 80s that we can glimpse in all its sections. But there is still a lot of scratching left in this second installment: many more vehicles, the possibility to upload their characteristics, automatic shot towards the cars that want to stop us, a life bar that allows us to take three hits.
Everything is framed in front of the slogan ” Bigger, Better, Faster “, but it’s even changed the way we play: we will go to specific destinations to steal buildings while escaping at full speed. In addition, although the controls continue, in broad strokes, being two, we have a wider range of options to perform even more virginities. Without a doubt, the best game of the three.
The appearance of PAKO Forever has surprised us a lot. We have not seen news about its development anywhere and the truth is that we did not expect such a title after the excellent PAKO 2. With this, we do not mean that it is a bad game, and more when it has not yet officially left, but the experience of the game is rather a return to the origins. Literally, since in PAKO Forever we are going to return to the parking of the original game.
At first glance, it does not seem that there are many differences between this game and the first PAKO, but once we start playing we will notice that crumb has been added to the development. We return to the endless escape of the police, but now we have the possibility of using the objects that will appear on the stage after our persecutors explode. Something that we will notice more thanks to the fact that the objects of the scenario will now disappear after a collision. An addictive video game that looks like a 2.0 version of what we live in the PAKO of 2014.
