How to Open Outlook in Safe Mode

Start Outlook in Safe Mode with the /safe Option

If for some reason you guys are not able to open Outlook in safe mode using the CTRL shortcut key. As well as you can’t find the Outlook shortcut icon on the desktop too. Then you guys can always use this method in order to start outlook in safe mode. You have to run the Outlook command along with a specific Windows search. The steps are as follows–

  • Tap on the Start Menu and then in the search bar, just type the following: outlook.exe /safe
  • Click on the search result and then Microsoft outlook will start in safe mode.
  • Just like that, you can open the Run window via pressing the Windows key + R shortcut key.
  • Now, you have to type the following command into the Run dialog box and click on Enter: Outlook.exe /safe

Open Outlook in Safe Mode via CTRL Key

This is also a faster and easier method that will work for each and every version of Outlook. In order to do this the steps are –

  • Now on your desktop, just look for the shortcut icon of the Outlook email client.
  • You have to press down your Ctrl key on the keyboard & then double-click that shortcut icon.

Note: You guys can also search for Outlook in the Windows search as well. Then hold down the CTRL key and tap on the Outlook icon from the search result as well.

  • A Message will now appear along with the text saying, “You’re holding down the CTRL-key. Do you want to start Outlook in safe mode?
  • Now you guys have to tap on the Yes button in order to run Outlook in Safe mode.
  • Then whenever Outlook will now be opened in Safe Mode, you can also recognize it when you see the text in the Title bar: Microsoft Outlook (Safe Mode).

Create a Shortcut

Now if you guys frequently have to start outlook in safe mode then you guys can create a shortcut option on your desktop for easier access. This is actually the best way to always have the safe mode option within the reach of a tap. However, creating the shortcut can also be a bit complex. Anyway, the steps in order to create this shortcut are actually:

  • Head to your Desktop then you guys have to right-click on an empty area and then choose New > Shortcut.
  • Now you guys have to type the full path to Outlook.exe and then also use the “/safe” switch.
  • The full path of the outlook basically relies on the Windows architecture & Microsoft Office version you have
  • For Windows along with the x86 version (32-bit), the path you guys have to mention is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office<version-number>

For Windows along with the x64 version (64-bit), the path that you have to mention is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office < version-number>

  • Now in the input field, you need to use the full path of the outlook.exe along with the safe mode command:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\outlook.exe” /safe

Outlook in Safe Mode

  • Then tap on OK in order to create this shortcut.

There are supplementary keys for running applications in that mode of Outlook 2007/2010.

  • /safe:1 – Run Outlook via turning off the reading area.
  • /safe:2 – You have to run Outlook along with no mail check at startup.
  • /safe:3 – Just open Outlook via means of client extensions disabled.
  • /safe:4 – Open Outlook along with no loading of the outcmd.dat file.

How can you Fix Issues In Outlook Safe Mode?

You guys can fix issues using a lot of ways in Outlook safe mode.

Reopen Outlook To Fix “Processing” Error

If Outlook shows a “Processing” error and also stays stuck there each time you guys open it. You can just relaunch Outlook in safe in order to fix the issue.

  • You have to close Outlook on your computer.
  • Then just open Outlook in safe mode using any of the above methods.
  • Tap on the File menu at the top and choose Exit in order to exit the app.
  • Just open the app when you normally would.

Turn off Add-Ins In Outlook

Add-ins basically allows you to extend the capability of Outlook. But, at the same time, they can also cause issues along with the app if they aren’t fully compatible. If you have installed any add-ins lately, then you might want to try disabling them and also see if it fixes the issue.

  • Forst, open Outlook in safe via your preferred method.
  • Tap on the File menu at the top and then choose Options from the left sidebar.
  • Choose Add-ins from the left sidebar in order to view the Outlook add-ins list.
  • You guys will find a dropdown menu labeled as Manage at the bottom of your screen. Choose COM Add-ins from it and then tap on Go in order to view your add-ins.
  • Now close Outlook on your PC.
  • Open Outlook in normal mode and it should then open without even an issue.
  • Now open the add-ins screen and then enable one add-in at a time. This will help you guys to find the culprit. Then you guys can then get rid of the troublesome add-in from Outlook completely.
