We’ve been hearing about the iPhone 15 since before Apple debuted the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. Apple may bring back haptic tech for physical controls in the iPhone 15 series next year. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple will replace the side power and volume buttons on Pro models with “solid-state” keys next year. Kuo adds that Apple will place the Taptic Engine array along the phone’s vertical edge on both sides. Apple’s current phones have one Taptic Engine. The clicky power and volume buttons are gone.

USB-C, periscope camera technology, and an Apple-designed modem chip may be in the iPhone 15. This list includes all we know about the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, although Apple’s intentions may change. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple may replace the iPhone 15 “Pro Max” with a “Ultra” variant. Apple’s highest-end M1 and Apple Watch Ultra were released in 2022. The iPhone 15 Ultra might replace the “Pro Max,” the highest-end iPhone.

The pill-and-hole cutout will spread to all iPhone 15 models, according to rumors. All iPhone 15 models will feature Dynamic Islands instead of notches.

Apple will likely keep four models: the 6.1-inch iPhone 15, 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Max, and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max. The lower iPhone 15 models will have less features than the more costly “pro” variants.

Apple is contemplating replacing the Lightning connector on the iPhone 15 with a USB-C port to comply with European rules that are being enacted. Apple must switch to a global design or create European-only iPhones with USB-C connections to comply with these laws.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have stated Apple would make the move, so it’s likely. Apple’s intentions may alter.

Periscope Lens Tech

Apple may deploy “periscope” telephoto lens technology in the iPhone 15 Pro versions of 2023. Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, believes the periscope camera lens will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the most costly model.

iPhone 13 Pro Light Blue Side Feature

Periscope lens technology allows 5x or 10x optical zoom. Since Pro versions have 3x zoom, a periscope lens would improve the iPhone’s zoom.

Samsung smartphones feature periscope lens technology for 4x to 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom.

Apple Modems?

Apple has been developing modem chips in-house for years, and 2023 may be the year they launch, but it’s uncertain whether they’ll be ready.

Triad Apple 5G Modem

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s 5G modem chip efforts have “failed,” thus the 2023 iPhones won’t employ Apple processors. The iPhone 15 models will use Qualcomm.

TSMC’s 3-nanometer node A-series processor may debut in the iPhone 15 variants. 3nm chip technology is predicted to boost processing performance by 10–15% and reduce power consumption by 30%.

Apple silicon 3nm

After losing an Intel order, Apple chip supplier TSMC may reduce 3-nanometer chip production. The interruption may affect Apple’s 3nm chip manufacturing, although TSMC makes the iPhone 15’s 3nm A17 processors.
