A Windows 10 system has different mechanisms in place to keep the system running cool as well. If a system overheats, then it will either shut down, or it will take preventive measures. In order to reduce the temperature. Just read this article to know all about How to Tell if CPU is Throttling in Windows – Tutorial. Let’s start!

One component that actually tends to heat up and can subsequently be damaged from high temperatures is the CPU. On Windows 10, if the CPU heats up too much, or also the temperature in the chassis builds up to the point. That it is dangerous for hardware, then the system will either shut down. Or it will throttle the CPU’s power to decrease the temperature.

CPU throttling to reduce the temperature

The more intensely a CPU works i.e.. The more processes that it runs at the same time, the more power it uses, and the hotter it runs as well. A CPU can get hot to a certain extent, however, if it heats up beyond a certain point. It needs to cool down one way or the other to avoid permanent damage to the hardware.

Windows 10 will normally throttle power to the CPU if it’s actually heating up. This of course means that tasks will take more time in order to complete, your system may freeze, and everything will be slow as well.

If you guys suspect the CPU is being throttled, then you can check it via keeping an eye on the CPU usage. On Windows 10, you guys can do this along with the Resource Monitor tool. Or you can use a third-party CPU monitoring tool for the job as well.

CPU Throttling – Resource Monitor

  • Click on the Win+R keyboard shortcut in order to open the run box.
  • In the run box, just enter: perfmon.exe /res and click the Enter key.
  • You can use your system just like you guys normally do.
  • The Maximum Frequency value basically shows the current power consumption via the CPU.
  • If the value does not go beyond a certain point, then it means the CPU is being throttled as well.

CPU throttling basically happens whenever the CPU overheats. If your system is cool, the CPU will run to its maximum capacity without even being throttled. So what you really want to check is its temperature.

If a CPU is overheating, and then it is going to be throttled.

  • Just download a free app that is called HWiNFO, and run it.
  • Choose ‘Sensors Only’ and then tap on Run.
  • Just scroll down to the DTS section for your processor.
  • Take note of the temperatures; and if the CPU is too hot. Then the app will highlight the temperature in red.
  • If the CPU is running too hot, then it will be throttled.

Avoid CPU throttling

You guys can avoid CPU throttling via keeping your system cool. There is actually no way to turn it off, and even if there were. We would not recommend using it as well.

  • Just keep your system in a well-ventilated area and make sure air can flow in and out.
  • Apply thermal paste or also add a fan in order to keep it cool.
  • Make sure the chassis is clean i.e., there’s also no dust build-up.
  • Make sure the fans are working properly as well.
  • Your CPU may be throttled on battery power so just try to stay connected to a power source.
  • Avoid overclocking the CPU as well.

Your CPU may overheat because of hardware problems as well. If you guys suspect a hardware component might be the cause of it, have it checked. Some users also have reported that disabling Intel SpeedStep in their BIOS has fixed a CPU that overheats as well.
