However, Microsoft Word can’t recognize .pages files, making editing or opening .pages files on Windows is a complicated job. Or does it?
Also, it’s not as easy as it is on macOS to open a .docx file using Pages. There is a technique to open, edit, and also re-export .pages files on a Windows PC.
Windows – Open & Edit .pages Files
Well, editing or opening .pages files on Windows is somehow difficult. Sadly, it’s not as simple as double-tapping on the file and opens it in MS Word or other text editing software. But, whenever you can access an Apple ID and a web browser such as Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer, then there’s a method to open, edit, and also re-export .pages files on Windows.
In the first step head over to the internet browser of your choice and visit iCloud.com
After you visit the page you can then sign in using your Apple ID. If you don’t have an Apple ID, then don’t fret simply create one here. However, Signing up automatically for an Apple ID allows users to 5GB of free iCloud storage.
After you signed in, choose the Pages icon.
Choose the Settings (cog) icon and tap Upload Document. A window should appear: you can simply browse the .pages file you like to edit and upload it.
There are now two choices, depending on how to proceed further:
When the document successfully uploaded to iCloud, you can then directly open and edit the document in-browser using a web-friendly model of Pages. It probably won’t have all the whistles or bells of the full Pages app. But it’s a handy way to make an instant modification to .pages documents.
Document editing in-browser isn’t the only choice though. So you can re-export the file when a Word-friendly document and open it in MS Word on your computer. If you want to do this, choose the Tools (wrench) icon, tap Download a Copy, and choose Word. Then the document will be re-exported as a .docx file and it is available to download on your computer.
That’s all! Your document should start to download. Also, they are ready to open and edited in Microsoft Word.
Save as a .docx extension using Pages
Now that we’ve explained earlier how to edit or open .pages files on Windows. It might worth pointing out that like the iCloud website, Mac Pages can export documents as MS Word-friendly .doc &.docx files (using PDF, simple text, ePub and Pages ’09 files too). We know that it might not that much help this time around, but it probably saves your time in the future.
So, come let’s take a look at how to save a .docx or .doc file in Pages for Mac:
Head over to the file you want to export as a .docx or .doc file in Pages for Mac.
From the left corner of Pages, choose File > Export to > Word.
Then you should be redirected to an export window. From here, you can also add a password to the file if needed, then tap Next to export as a default Word file (.docx).
But in case, if you’re using an older model of Word (pre-2004) then there’s an additional step. Before exporting the file, simply choose Advanced Options, and in the dropdown menu, choose .doc (Word 1997 – 2004 supported). Once you’ve chosen the exact file type, tap Next to export the file.
Then a prompt appear appear to save or name your file as you would if you were saving a standard .pages file in Pages. Just decide what to name the file and tap Save to save it.
