How to Disable Youtube Video Paused Continue Watching

youtube video paused continue watching

Videos are actually meant to be watched which means if you’re watching YouTube. Then the website expects that you guys haven’t sent it to the background. That’s not how everyone actually watches YouTube. The website also lets you create playlists and if they are music playlists. That you guys are listening to, the tab doesn’t really have to be in the front. You can send it to the back or minimize the window that it’s open in. In this article, we are going to talk about How to Disable Youtube Video Paused Continue Watching. Let’s begin!

YouTube can’t actually tell if it’s in the background or not but it can tell if you haven’t interacted along with the website in a while and that’s when it will pause the video that’s playing as well. You guys will also see a ‘Video paused. Continue watching’ prompt as well. You guys have to tap on Yes to continue watching.

Why does Youtube prompt users at all?

This feature was basically introduced on YouTube around 2 years ago, along with no comments as to why this was introduced at all. Some might also say that it is there to make sure that the user is conscious and has not slept whenever watching the video so that it is not streaming and consuming unnecessary Internet bandwidth. But, some might also argue that the feature was introduced so that users are more interactive on the website so that the advertisements may also have a real live audience.

Some of the users also complain that the prompt is rather annoying. Because they are not always available near the computer when music is playing in the background on YouTube. Nonetheless, just like Netflix, Google also thinks that the feature is important for users so that they remain active on the website.

How to Disable Youtube Video Paused Continue Watching

In order to disable the ‘Video paused. Continue watching’ prompt, you guys have to use an extension called YouTube NonStop. This is also a Chrome extension so this solution only applies to Chrome, and also to the Development beta of Edge, if you guys are running it as well.

Just install YouTube NonStop from the Chrome Web Store and it will actually take care of the rest. You can leave YouTube running in the background and the extension won’t stop the video from playing whenever you haven’t interacted along with the website for a long time.

YouTube also added this prompt about two years ago. It was sporadic back then and not all users saw it as well. It seems to only appear if you guys are sign in to YouTube and have ‘watching’ for too long.

Further

The feature is meant to save data, and perhaps even battery if you guys are watching on a laptop that is not plugged in. If the video keeps playing, it will also consume more data, especially if you guys have autoplay enabled. At the same time, the battery will deplete much faster as you guys are playing media in a resource-hungry browser. The prompt isn’t without even the purpose but there should be an option to turn it off.

The extension is passive; you guys can also hide it in the overflow menu or the extensions’ menu. You can’t toggle it On or Off. Also, you can turn it off if you want the feature back (or uninstall it) then there’s no off button. If you prefer Firefox over Chrome, and there doesn’t seem to be an add-on for it that can get rid of this feature as well. We mentioned that the prompt does not appear when you watch without even signing in. If you guys can watch without signing in, you may not see the prompt. Of course, this means no watch history and you guys lose access to your playlists and channel subscriptions.

YouTube NonStop Extension Not Working

Just like that, if none of the above Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox YouTube Nonstop extensions are not working. Then you guys may directly download the source file from the creator’s GitHub repository.

Here are the steps:

  • Head over to lawfx/YoutubeNonStop and then tap on the Clone or Download button (the green one) then select Download ZIP.
  • Next, you will have to extract out the files and place them anywhere on your desktop. There you can easily access it as well. Personal preference is basically to extract the files directly into the Documents folder (on Windows) and also leave the desktop homepage empty and clean as well.
  • Now, head onto your Google Chrome and then open the extension management page via entering chrome://extensions/ into your search bar. Just like that, you can also access this page via clicking on the menu (three-dot icon located on the top right corner) and also then from under More Tools, choose Extensions.
  • Over here on the Extensions page, you guys will want to make sure that you have switched on the Developer mode toggle located on the top-right corner as well.
  • Lastly, just tap on the Load unpacked button and then select the extracted extension file that you had downloaded in Steps 1 & 2.

You’re just done! Just make sure the extension is turned on and also make sure that you do not ever delete the extension file. Even if you decide to move the extension folder to another location, and then you will have to repeat Steps 3-5 in order to load it in.
