Rather than deleting chats, WhatsApp users can hide and archive them instead. In this way, they can revisit old messages and also media even if the conversations are not visible on the Chats tab as well. However, there might come a time where you guys no longer need to use these archived chats. Fortunately, you guys can delete them without even unarchiving them first.
So if you guys are not familiar with navigating via WhatsApp’s features, then we’re here to help you. We have here a guide that can actually help you delete all of your archived chats on your account as well.
Archive a Chat
If you’ve ever tried deleting a chat, then you’ve noticed that the “delete” option doesn’t exist. Well, not in the conversation list screen as well. In order o archive a chat, head to the chats tab and either swipe left if you guys have an iOS device or also hold the chat if you are an Android user. Then, choose Archive. You’ll notice that this has removed the conversation from the list as well.
But, the deleted chat still exists. It’s actually in the Archived Chats section. In order to access this location on Android devices, now scroll down to the bottom of the chat list, and you’ll see it as well. For iOS devices, it is towards the top of the list actually.
With group chats that you guys didn’t create but were a part of, all you guys can do is exit them. If you do this, then the conversation will disappear from your WhatsApp profile. You can also delete one-on-one chats. In order to do this, just head to the archived folder and either swipe left on iOS devices. Or press and hold the conversation in question for Android devices as well.
If you want to return the chat to the regular conversation list, choose Unarchive. If you guys want to delete it or leave the conversation, then choose More and then Delete Chat or Exit Group.
How to Delete Archived Chats on Whatsapp
If you guys want to erase all of your archived chats, then you have two options. You can delete them via selecting individual conversations via the archived section or through deleting all of your chat on the platform.
In any case, we’re here to help you also. Just remember that you have to leave archived group chats and delete them manually. In order to remove them from your account.
Choose and delete chats on the archives tab
If you only want to delete archived chats on WhatsApp, then you can access them under the Chats tab. On the archives section, just choose all of the chats that you want to erase and press the delete icon among the options.
- Open WhatsApp from your home screen or app drawer.
- Now under the Chats tab, and access the archives.
- Click and hold a chat thread to choose it and in order to access some options. You can choose multiple chats via clicking on them after selecting the first one.
Note: Remember not to choose any archived groups as you have to delete those types of chats one by one.
- At the top of your screen, just click the delete icon. When WhatsApp prompts you in order to confirm your decision, click “DELETE.”
Unfortunately, selecting and deleting multiple items on the archives isn’t possible via the WhatsApp web client. So if you primarily use the web app, and you have no choice but to delete your archived chats one at a time.
Delete all chats on WhatsApp
Aside from choosing and erasing chats from your archives section. You can also remove all of your chats on WhatsApp. You can also use this method if you don’t mind losing all of your data from your active conversations on the platform.
Just like the method before, then this option won’t delete all of your group chats. But, it will clear all of your conversations on those chats as well. Here’s how you can delete all of your chats on Android:
- First of all, open WhatsApp on your device.
- Tap the three-dot icon at the top right corner of your screen in order to open some options and choose Settings.
- Now navigate to Chats > Chat history.
- Click “Delete all chats” and then confirm your decision.
For those who use WhatsApp on their browsers, then the option to delete all of the chats isn’t available on the web app version. So if you guys want to delete all of your chat histories, you guys have to do it from your phone.
Can I recover deleted WhatsApp messages?
In case you guys accidentally deleted some important data along with your archived chats. Then you can recover your chat history via using your backup. But, you can’t restore messages received after the backup.
In order to recover your deleted messages, reinstall WhatsApp on your device and select to restore using a backup. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully to prevent void any mishaps. When the app finishes loading your data, you can now view all of the messages that you accidentally deleted as well.
