How to Customize Calendar Notification Alerts on iOS Devices

Do you want to customize calendar notification alerts? There are lots of great features in the Calendar app. However, you can integrate/collaborate with other calendar services. You can easily invite people to events, attach files and notes to meetings and arrange appointments. Also, you can receive notifications.

The best thing about the notifications in the Calendar app is that they are more reliable than many probably realize. You can also receive one alert for a single event, create Travel Time notifications, and setting up custom alerts on Mac.

However, for both iOS and Mac, we want to ensure that you’re taking the benefit of all you can do. So, here’s how to customize and efficiently use Calendar notifications.

Customize Calendar Notification Alerts on Mac

Default Calendar alerts

The best way to get started customizing Calendar alerts on Mac is by setting up your defaults. Simply, open the Calendar on your Mac, tap Calendar > Preferences from the menu bar, and select the Alerts tab.

Make sure the top drop-down box is your default calendar Account. However, if you integrate with other calendars like Google, you can also choose that account here.

Another section is the default alerts you like for all events, birthdays and all-day events. You can also choose a quite different default notification for each of these three. However, these apply to Calendar on your other devices as well, until you mark the box for Use these default alerts on only this PC.

This type of flexibility allows you to receive alerts differently than on your iPhone or iPad. However, it’s quite handy if you prefer our Mac for personal tasks but your Calendar also works and personal on your iPhone.

Here’s another Time to Leave settings. It is another reliable feature. By marking this box, you can make sure based on your location and worst conditions when you should leave for your event.

After setting up the default alerts for Calendar on your Mac. The customization options don’t stop there as you can still create notifications whenever you like for individual events as required.

Individual Calendar event alerts

Just open the Calendar and choose an existing or create another event. Under it there is a date and time for the event, also you have Alert options. Obviously, this will default to what you set up in the above Preferences, but you can also modify or add another notification.


  • Change the notification, tap the Alert drop-down box and select a new time.
  • Add another notification, tap the plus sign next to the Alert drop-down box and choose additional time.
  • Remove an alert, tap the Alert drop-down box and select None.

Make sure, you can also use Travel Time for any of your events. Simply choosing that drop-down box and selecting a time.

Custom event alerts

Along with the built-in times, you can also choose from for your event alerts, you can set up custom notifications.

However, in the Alert drop-down box, choose Custom. Here, you can also select to view a message. You can also hear a sound, share an email, or open a file based on a time you select in relation to your event. Just choose the type of alert, end the remaining fields for that type, and then tap OK.

This type of notification can be quite handy for meetings, interviews, and appointments where you want to be prepared ahead of time.

Default Calendar alerts

You can also set up default alerts on your iPhone or iPad just as easily as you can on Mac.

Step 1:

Initially, open Settings and choose Calendar.

Step 2:

Select the Default Alert Times.

Step 3:

Now set your default alerts for birthdays, events, and all-day events. Optionally, allow the toggle for Time to Leave.

Individual Calendar event alerts

You can also adjust your alerts from the defaults for existing or latest events. Simply open the Calendar app and do one of the following. TO:

  • Change the notification, click Alert and select a new time.
  • Add another notification, click Edit and then Second Alert to choose additional time.
  • Remove an alert, click Alert or Second Alert and select None.

To use Travel Time, click Edit for the event, choose Travel Time, and allow the toggle. You can also choose a starting location and timing.
