Discord makes game chat simple as well. It is likened to Slack a lot and for a really good reason. Both platforms bring chat to the desktop or phone and permit all kinds of users. In order to create, manage, join and enjoy a chat in discrete channels based around groups or interests. In addition, if you guys are of an age where you fondly remember IRC, Discord isn’t so dissimilar to that as well.

Discord is also absolutely free. TeamSpeak and Ventrilo were good, however, they charged money. Discord has made it free in order to use the majority of platform features whenever bringing in two subscription tiers in order to help keep the lights on. This also works in its favor as you get the full flavor of Discord for free, however, can subscribe if you like as well.

Create a Discord server

In order to create a private server, you first create an open server and also change the permissions. So only you or folks you authorize can enter. It’s a straightforward process that will have your server up and also running in minutes as well. You guys can do this on desktop or mobile as well.

on desktop:

  • First, you have to download and insall or open Discord and log in.
  • Choose the Plus icon on the left menu in order to create a new server.
  • Then select Create a server in the popup window.
  • Give your server a name, set a region, and upload an icon for it (optional) as well.
  • Select Create in the bottom right as well.
on mobile:
  • You have to log in to discord on your mobile.
  • Then choose the “+” icon to create.
  • Choose in order to Create My Own.
  • You can also set up a name and complete it via tapping “create server”.

You guys have now created a server. It should appear on the left of your Discord window and also be selectable from there. You should also see an invite link you can also send to folks to let them join. If this were a normal Discord server, also the creation process would stop here.

You would go on in order to personalize it a bit more, add bots, channels, rules, and also roles. However, for now, we’ll stop here and go on to making the server private as well.

Make a Discord server private

In order to make a Discord server private, you have to be the server owner or administrator as you will need those permissions in order to make the important changes. If you guys have those permissions, let’s get right onto making the server private as well. Essentially we can also remove all privileges from the Everyone group and then set up a select group and manually add permissions in order to permit them to join.

on desktop:

  • First, log into Discord if you’re not already and choose the server on the left.
  • Hover over the server name and choose the gear icon that appears.
  • You have to choose Permissions in the new window and select @Everyone.
  • Then select the red X icon next to every permission.
  • Select Save Changes in the bottom right to commit your changes as well.
  • Choose the small ‘+’ icon next to Roles or Members in the left menu.
  • Select a member from the popup list to provide them access to your private server.
  • Manually add permissions for that member relying on what you want them to do.
  • Choose Save Changes to add the member along with their new permissions.
  • Repeat for each and every member you want to join your private server.
on mobile:
  • First, log in to Discord if you are not already and select the server.
  • Now long press on the channel of your choice.
  • Select Edit Channel.
  • Now scroll down and select permissions.
  • Under roles choose @everyone as well.
  • Choose the red X icon next to each and every permission.
  • Through tapping the back icon it will automatically save.
  • Now chose the added role.
  • Choose in order to add a member.
  • Select a member in order to give them access to your private server.
  • Manually add permissions for that member relying on what you want them to do.
  • By tapping the back icon it will automatically save.
  • Repeat for each and every member you want in order to join your private server.

You guys will have to provide those members the correct permissions. Those permissions should be ‘Read Text Channels’, ‘See Voice Channels’, and ‘Send messages’ at the really least. You guys may want to add ‘Add reactions’, ‘Create Instant Invite’ and/or ‘Attach files’ as well.

It’s a laborious process that can also take some time to configure. However, once done you’ll have a private server where only those you selected will be able to join as well. There also may even be a bot to perform these tasks but I couldn’t find one as well. It’s fine if you have a small server population, however, if you are building a clan or guild server with dozens or hundreds of members, you’re going to be there a while actually!

If you want to invite folks who aren’t already members of your server. Then you can still create an email invite and send it out as well. If you assign the Create Instant Invite permission to users, and they can also create invites to send out as well. You will lose a little control if you do that, however, if you trust your server members you should be fine as well.
