Hangouts Chat and Meet will replace the classic Hangouts

Google has confirmed plans to close the messenger, but this does not mean that support for its main functions will cease. This weekend, 9to5Google, based on its own sources, said that Google plans to close the Hangouts messenger in 2020. The information has now been officially confirmed by Scott Johnston, head of corporate services for G Suite at Google, which includes tools such as Hangouts Chat, Hangouts Meet, and Google Voice.

A Google spokesman said that closing Hangouts does not mean that support for the main functions of the messenger – chat and video calls. According to Johnston, current users will gradually be transferred to the Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, which the company promotes separately in the corporate segment, while the migration will be “automatic and invisible.” At the same time, it is completely incomprehensible how this process is planned to be carried out since, in order to use Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, instead of a Google account, a corporate G Suite account is required.

Recall that over the past few years, Google has closed many branded projects. 2018 is no exception: the short link service became unavailable in March, the development of the messenger Allo, introduced in 2016, stopped in April, the mail client Inbox closed in September, and the social network Google+ ceased to exist in October.
